The teams posed for the press before the first of the two annual St. Joseph's-St. Patrick's basketball games. The first game, played in the Seminary Barn, saw the very fast Pirate team unable to overcome the towering Theology squad. With a starting team averaging 6' 3", including three men standing 6' 5", the theologians were able to control the backboards most of the time. Led by Dennis Moriarty '62 with 19 points, Gerald Horan '60 with 18, and John Cloherty '60 and Russell Terra '62 with 14 apiece, the Men of Menlo, were never out of the lead, pouring in most of their points on tip-ins and follow shots until the end when they had amassed 83 points to the College's 49. Looking like saplings among the tall timber, Dan Holland S.J.C. '61 and Brian Cahill S.J.C. '61 were still able to get some rebounds for the College, while Phil Brady S.J.C. '62 with 12 and Mike McNamara S.J.C. '61 with 10 led the St. Joe's scorers.
It was roughly the same story the next week on the College court as the St. Joseph's five was again defeated at the hands of a tall Seminary team, this time the hard-driving, smooth-shooting Philosophy squad, by a score of 70 to 60. The game Collegians put up a good fight on their home court, but were unable to handle the combination of steady rebounding and the consistent shooting of Rich Kohles '65, who poured in a very fine 27 points, and Ed Brennan '64 who came up with 14. It was again Brady and McNamara who led the College scoring, this time with 20 and 17 respectively.
